After Senna won the championships in Formula ford 1600cc he announced his retirement form motor sport. He returned to Sao Paulo and conforming to his father’s wishes he commenced work in a family building supply business. Four months of a steady job in the bosom of his family was not enough for Senna. He was a racer, a champion and after his separation form Liliane he could feel the pull of Britain once again. /// Después que Senna ganó los campeonatos en Fórmul Ford 1600cc anunció su retiro del automovilismo. Due to his separation form Liliane Senna was more able to justify a move back to England to resume his racing career. Senna always has a knack of getting what he wanted the most and after discussion with his father Milton let him decide between a career in racing and a career in the family business. Obviously Senna chose racing and he managed to attract sponsorship from the Brazilian Bank, Banerji. /// Debido a su separación de Liliane, Senna pudo justificar más una vuelta a Inglaterra para reasumir su carrera automovilística. This time he settled near Donnington Park in Derbyshire, the home of the Rushen Green Formula Ford 2000 team. The team used 1.6 litre cars produced by Van Diemen, the cars Senna had raced in 1981. Senna arrived back in England in February of 1982 and he entered the Pace Petroleum Championship and the European Formula Ford 2000 Championships. /// Esta vez se estableció cerca de Donington Park en Derbyshire, la casa del equipo de Fórmula Ford 2000 de Rushen Green. His first race was at Brands hatch. He took pole position, posted the fastest race lap and won the race by some fourteen seconds. In his next race at Oulton Park he took the pole the fastest lap and won the race, beating the much-fancied Calvin Fish. The next day at Silverstone he repeated the clean sweep and he would do it again at Donnington on the 4th of April and gain at Snetterton a week later despite a brake problem. The day after Snetterton he returned to Silverstone to take pole, fastest race lap and victory in the race. /// Su primer carrera fue en Brands Hatch. Consiguió la pole position, marcó la vuelta más rápida y ganó la carrera por algunos catorce segundos. En la siguiente carrera en Oulton Park agarró la pole, la vuelta más rápida y ganó la carrera, batiendo al muy favorito Calvin Fish. Al día siguiente en Silverstone repitió la barrida completa y lo haría de nuevo en Donington el 4 de Abril y ganaría en Snetterton una semana después a pesar de su problema de frenos. Senna’s early formula Ford performances were nothing short of sensational and they were of sufficient quality to make most of the Formula One teams sit up in notice. Alex Hawkridge of Toleman and Ron Dennis of McLaren approached Senna to offer to sponsor him through and entire season for Formula Three. At the time new rules made an entire season in Formula three a perquisite for getting the super-licence that would allow a driver to compete in Formula one. Senna’s reaction was not what they may have expected. Senna even at this stage in his career, showed he was astute. Senna kept the negotiations with both sides but he was reluctant to sign a deal with either team. It was obvious to Senna that he had become an interesting proposition for the Formula One teams and he did not want to become tied to a team at this stage. Senna though that he still needed to more experience is some of the lower Formulae where the cars are more or less equal. Senna knew that in Formula One the performance of the teams was largely dependant on how much financial support at team gets. /// Los tempranos rendimientos de Senna en la Fórmula Ford no fueron nada cortos de sensacionalismo y fueron de calidad suficiente para hacer que la mayoría de los equipos de Fórmula Uno se enteraran de la noticia. Era obvio para Senna que se había convertido en una proposición interesante para los equipos de Fórmula uno y no quería atarse a un equipo en esta etapa. Senna pensó que todavía necesitaba más experiencia en algunas de las Fórmulas menores donde los autos son más o menos iguales. Senna had ambitions to be World Champion and he did not want to give control of his career to somebody who would be putting their interests over his. Senna looked at the opportunities that had been presented to him and he decided he did not want to be tied to a particular team. Senna was lucky that he had financial support: many young drivers in his position would have taken the sponsorship deal for Formula Three and would have had their options limited for Formula One. /// Senna tenía ambiciones de ser Campeón Mundial y no quería darle el control de su carrera a alguien que pondría sus intereses sobre los de él. On 30th of May 1982 Senna was racing at Oulton Park. Fish was leading Senna and Kenny Andrews in a pack that has split off the front of the main field. Suddenly Senna's right-rear tyre suffered an instantanious deflation and exploded. He was pitch sideway but he managed to regain control of his three-wheeled Van Diemme. He had to way Andrews past. Calvin won the race, the first race that year in which Senna had not been victorious. /// El 30 de Mayo de 1982 Senna corría en Oulton Park. Fish lideraba a Senna y Kenny Andrews en un grupo que se había separado del frente del pelotón principal. After his victory at Oulton Park Fish had been given a massive boost in confidence. At the next race at Brands Hatch he took pole position. In the race Senna got the jump of Fish and took the race and the fastest lap from the young Englishman by two seconds. One week later at Mallory Park Senna won again taking the fastest lap. /// Después de su victoria en Oulton Park Fish había recibido un masivo estímulo de confianza. On the first of August at Snetterton Senna was leading the race from Fish. On lap six Fish pulled out at the end of the long straight to overtake Senna. Fish pulled alongside Senna but Senna started to weave across the track. Fish held his position as long as he could but he was forced onto the grass by Senna. Fish’s car bounced into the air as he went on to the grass. Fish was out of the race and Senna went on to take victory. Fish made a formal protest to the RAC and Senna was fined. Senna kept his points from the race but the incident with Fish had soured their relationship. /// El primero de Agosto en Snetterton, Senna lideraba la carrera delante de Fish. The 1982 in both Formula Ford 2000 championships told the story of Senna versus Fish. In round five of the European Championship at Zandvoort missed the first practice session due to a clutch problem but he still took pole, fastest lap and the race victory. /// El año 1982 en ambos campeonatos de Fórmula Ford 2000 contaron la historia de Senna versus Fish. Senna had been approached by Eddie Jordan who had just started his Formula three team and was looking for up and coming talent. At the three day test Senna completed thirty-eight with a best time of 54.03. The fastest time set at the last race meeting was 50.40; it was little wonder that the Formula one teams were falling over each other to sign Senna. Ron Dennis and Eddie Jordan continued to press Senna over matters of sponsorship. Bust Senna was adamant that he wanted to test other Formula three cars before he signed for team. /// En junio de ese año, Senna se presentó a la prueba de Fórmula Tres en Silverstone. In the European Championship he won at Hockenheim, taking pole and fastest lap on the way and repeated the clean sweep at Osterreichring. Calvin fish was behind Senna in the European Championship and it looked as if it would be settled at the Danish circuit, Jyllandsring. Senna duly took pole with Fish down in sixth on the grid. Fish had a remarkable start and was second behind Senna at the first corner. Senna was on his best form, smashing the Formula ford 2000 lap record on way to secure victory in the race and the European championship crown. /// En el campeonato Europeo ganó en Hockenheim, con la pole y la vuelta más rápida en el camino y repitió la barrida completa en Österreichring. Calvin Fish estaba detrás de Senna en el Campeonato Europeo y pareció que se adaptaría al circuito Danés, Jyllandsring. Senna debidamente tomó la pole con Fish abajo, sexto en la grilla, Fish tuvo una largada notable y estaba segundo detrás de Senna en la primer curva. At Thruxton on the 39th of August Calvin Fish took pole position. At the start he stayed ahead of Senna until lap four when Senna's car developed a problem. This did not stop Senna it just meant that he had to hold back until lap thirteen when he muscled past Fish. Senna won the race nursing his car to the line as smoked poured from the back of his car. It was a miracle that he was able to break the Formula Ford 2000 lap record in his terminally sick car on the way to this remarkable victory. /// En Thruxton el 30 de Agosto Calvin Fish consiguió la pole position. En la largada permaneció delante de Senna hasta la vuelta cuatro cuando el auto de Senna desarrolló un problema. Esto no paró a Senna, solo significó que tenía que mantenerse hasta la vuelta trece cuando de abrió paso a la fuerza pasando a Fish. Senna ganó la carrera cuidando su auto hasta la línea mientras el humo se derramaba en la parte de atrás. Fue un milagro que pudiera romper el récord de vuelta de la Fórmula Ford 2000 en su auto terminalmente enfermo de camino a su notable victoria.
It is a testament to the genius of Senna that out of the twenty-eight formula Ford 2000 races he contested he won twenty-two, retired from four with mechanical failures and came second in the other two. He won both Championships he was competing in, The Pace Petroleum series and EFDA European Championship. /// Fue una declaración del genio de Senna que de las veintiocho carreras de la Fórmula Ford 2000 se presentó en veintidós, se retiró de cuatro con fallas mecánicas y llegó segundo en otras dos. To end off the 1982 Formula Three series there was to be a televised race from Thruxton, a showcase event for the up and coming drivers. Senna drove for dick Bennett’s Formula Three west surrey racing Team. In the two weeks that preceded the race he was electric in testing at Thruxton being nearly a second faster and another driver. When it came to qualifying for the race Senna took his customary pole position, 03.6 of who was then the strongest Formula three driver, Martin Brundle, who had taken pole at Thruxton only two weeks earlier. Reports of the race are scarce, He lead from start to finish, constructing a winning margin of thirteen seconds over the fifteen lap race. Autosport magazine was bang on with its prediction: "Here is a World champion in the making, for sure." /// El final de la serie Fórmula Tres de 1982 iba a ser una carrera televisada de Thruxton, un evento vitrina para los pilotos ascendentes y recién llegados. Senna manejó el Fórmula Tres del Equipo West Surrey Racing de Dick Bennett. En las dos semanas que precedieron a la carrera fue eléctrico en las pruebas en Thruxton siendo casi un segundo más rápido que otro piloto. Cuando llegó la clasificación para la carrera Senna agarró su acostumbrada pole position, a 03.6 de quien era el más fuerte piloto de Fórmula Tres, Martín Brundle, quien había tomado la pole en Thruxton solo dos semanas antes. After his victory he returned to Brazil for the winter. He returned to Britain in 1983 for the twenty race Marlboro British Formula three Championship, the last rung on the climb to Formula One. In the next installing of the Biography I will be looking at Senna's season in British Formula three. This season is still regarded as the best season of Formula Three ever. It was a titanic between Senna and the fancied Brit, Martin Brundle. /// Después de la victoria volvió a Brasil para el invierno.
