It was thirty years ago today… Keith Sutton Remembers Ayrton Senna’s first car victory /// Fue un día como hoy hace treinta años… Keith Sutton recuerda la primera victoria de Ayrton Senna.
For highly respected Formula One photographer Keith Sutton there have been many memorable moments in a career spanning over thirty years. In fact their have been very few momentous motorsport moments that Keith hasn’t seen in that time but when he’s asked to pin down his favourite memory from his career a smile crosses his face and the response is almost instant. “Thirty years ago. March 1981.” /// Para el muy respetado fotógrafo de la Fórmula Uno, Keith Sutton, hubo muchos momentos memorables en una carrera que se extendió por más de treinta años. De hecho hubo muy pocos momentos impactantes del automovilismo que Keith no haya visto en ese tiempo pero cuando se le pide que encuentre su recuerdo favorito de su carrera, le cruza la cara una sonrisa y la respuesta es casi instantánea. «Hace treinta años. Marzo de 1981».
It is indeed thirty years ago this week since Keith, then a young and enthusiastic motorsport photographer trying hard to make his name in the sport, crossed paths with a young Formula Ford driver from Brazil who was also at the beginning of his career and attempting to make his own name in motorsport. That driver was Ayrton Senna da Silva and what was to follow that week was the start of a friendship that would last until the legendary driver was tragically killed one sunny, spring day at Imola during the San Marino Grand Prix. /// En serio fue en una semana como esta hace treinta años que Keith, entonces un fotógrafo de automovilismo joven y entusiasta que intentaba con fuerza dejar su nombre en el deporte, cruzó caminos con un joven piloto de Fórmula Ford de Brasil que también estaba al comienzo de su carrera y trataba de marcar su propio nombre en el automovilismo. Ese piloto era Ayrton Senna da Silva y lo que siguió a esa semana fue el comienzo de una amistad que duraría hasta que el legendario piloto se mató un día soleado de primavera en Imola durante el Gran Premio de San Marino.
Having offered his photographic services to a variety of publications but only receiving indifferent replies in return he was commissioned by Autosport Brazil. Keith takes up the story. “I was at Thruxton working for a Brazilian motorsport magazine that wanted photographs of Brazilian drivers racing in England. I was shy in those days so I never introduced myself (to Senna) – I just took lots of photographs of him, in the paddock, on the track – he must have wondered why this photographer he had never seen before was taking so may rolls of film of him at only his second event in a racing car.” /// Ofrecía sus servicios fotográficos a una variedad de publicaciones pero solo recibía respuestas indiferentes, como pago fue encargado para Autosport Brasil. Keith comenta la historia. «Fue en Thruxton que trabajaba para una revista de automovilismo brasileña que quería fotos de pilotos brasileños que corrían en Inglaterra. Yo era tímido en esos días así que nunca me presenté (a Senna) —solo le saqué muchas fotos a él, en el paddock y en la pista— se debió de preguntar por qué este fotógrafo que nunca había visto antes le sacaba tantos rollos de fotos a él en su segundo evento en un auto de carrera».
The next round of the Townsend Thoresen championship was to be held at Brands Hatch on the 15th March. /// La fecha siguiente del campeonato Townsend Thoresen se hizo en Brands Hatch el 15 de marzo.
“For some reason I decided to go down to Brands Hatch the following weekend on the train using a free British Rail promotion ticket that was obtained after saving tokens from boxes of Kellogg’s Cornflakes.” Keith remembers. “I had just arrived at the Brands paddock when Senna approached me after recognising me from Thruxton. He asked me why I had been taking photographs of him. ‘Are you a professional photographer?’ he enquired. ‘Yes of course,’ was my reply. ‘Well I need photographs to send over to Brazil on a regular basis. Can you help me out?’ Naturally I agreed but only under the condition ‘that you pay me!’” /// «Por alguna razón decidí ir a Brands Hatch la semana siguiente con lluvia usando una entrada gratis de promoción de los Trenes Británicos que obtuve después de ahorrar fichas de las cajas de cereales Kellogg's». Recuerda Keith. «Recién llegaba al paddock del Brands cuando se me acercó Senna después de reconocerme por Thruxton. Me preguntó por qué le había sacado fotos. "¿Eres fotógrafo profesional?" me preguntó. "Sí claro", fue mi respuesta. "Bueno, necesito fotos para mandar a Brasil cada tanto. ¿Me puedes ayudar?" Lógico que estuve de acuerdo pero solo con la condición de "¡que me pagues!".»
Early spring weather in England is unpredictable at best and that week in March would see heavy rain, particularly on race day. Senna and his wife, Liliane, were still new to England and the cold and damp weather came as an unwelcome surprise to them as both were far more at home in the tropical weather of Sao Paolo. Senna’s Formula Ford race went ahead despite the wet conditions and those present at Brands Hatch that day were to witness history in the making that day, albeit unknowingly, as the small cars that were capable of 125mph, were to race around 15 laps of the shorter Indy Circuit. /// El clima de primavera en Inglaterra es impredecible en el mejor de los casos y esa semana de marzo tendría lluvias fuertes, en particular en el día de la carrera. Senna y su esposa, Liliane, todavía eran nuevos en Inglaterra y el clima frío y húmero era una sorpresa inoportuna para ellos que venían de lejos de una casa en el clima tropical de San Pablo. La carrera de Senna en la Fórmula Ford siguió a pesar de las condiciones mojadas y los que estuvieron presentes en Brands Harch ese día fueron testigos de que se hacía historia, aunque de forma inconsciente, mientras los autitos que eran capaces de correr a 200 km/h, iban a correr 15 vueltas al circuito Indy corto.
After winning his qualifying heat Senna would start the final from pole position. At 4:30pm the cars took to their allotted grid positions and when the lights went out Senna was seen to pull away as the cars rushed towards Graham Hill Bend in a wall of spray. Senna was invincible and took victory by 9.4 seconds from Mexican Alfonso Toledano. The emotional Brazilian was met with a kiss from Liliane in parc ferme and joined her husband on the podium to celebrate his first victory in a car. /// Después de ganar su serie clasificatoria Senna largaría la final desde la pole position. A las 16:30 los autos salieron para sus posiciones en la grilla y cuando las luces se apagaron, se vio que Senna partió mientras los autos se apuraban hacia la curva Graham Hill con una pared de spray. Senna fue invencible y se llevó la victoria por 9.4 segundos delante del mejicano Alfonso Toledano. El sentimental brasileño se encontró con un beso de Lilian en el parque cerrado y fue con su marido al podio para celebrar su primera victoria en un auto.
Keith was also on the podium capturing all the emotions of this historic moment and remembers: “He won his heat, then he won his race and there I was on top of the rostrum doing the shots – fantastic light, him and his wife. Brilliant. From that moment I tried to get to as many Formula Ford races as possible, doing shots for him.” /// Keith también estaba en el podio para capturar todas las emociones de este momento histórico y recuerda: «Ganó su serie, después ganó la carrera y ahí estaba en la cima del podio sacando fotos, con luz fantástica, de él y su mujer. Brillante. Desde ese momento traté de ir a la mayor cantidad de carreras de la Fórmula Ford como fuese posible, para sacarle fotos a él».
“I look back to this week thirty years ago with great fondness as it was the start of my friendship with the late, great Ayrton Senna. From the moment I first photographed him in only his second car race, and then taking his first victory a week later, I knew I was witnessing an incredibly charismatic and talented young racing driver who would one day go on to become one of Formula One’s legends.” /// «Vuelvo a recordar esa semana hace treinta años con gran afecto porque fue el comienzo de mi amistad con el gran Ayrton Senna, ya fallecido. Desde el momento en que lo fotografié en su segunda carrera, y después fotografié su primer victoria una semana más tarde, supe que era testigo de un carisma increible y un talentoso joven piloto de carreras que un día se convertiría en una de las leyendas de la Fórmula Uno».
And though it’s now thirty years ago since these events took place it’s clear that this memory of two aspiring talents who both met at the start of their respective professional careers will remain a special one to Keith for the rest of his life. /// Y aunque ahora pasaron treinta años desde que sucedieron estos eventos está claro que este recuerdo de los dos talentos ambiciosos que se encontraron al comienzo de sus respectivas tareas profesionales permanecerá como especial para Keith por el resto de su vida.
